Rome Future Week, the official event in our new headquarters

At Rome Future Week, OGB STUDIO is among the organizers

During the Rome Future Week, we were among the organizers of an event that saw great participation and enthusiasm.

To make the event interactive and engaging, we created two hands-on experiences:

  • The first, Your Carbon Footprint, invited participants to give a value to their impact in three different areas, subsequently showing how much our daily life produces in terms of CO2.
  • The second interaction asked participants to assign priorities, in the different intended uses (home, office, school, shopping centers, hospitals, etc.) to fundamental parameters such as natural light, thermal comfort, air quality, inclusion, aspects related to sustainability.

The event was intended to be a starting point for reflection on how sustainable practices not only improve the environment, but also create economic and social value. Sustainability, in fact, is not limited to protecting the planet, but also promotes inclusion and well-being within organizations.

Rome launches new sustainable Super Hotels

Luxury hotels increasingly sustainable. Just like many new buildings in the capital. Indeed, environmental sustainability in architecture is now the first of the requirements that investors and real estate companies are looking for. The proof also comes from three 5-star hotels that are about to open in Rome: the first is the Radisson Collection in via delle Botteghe Oscure, pure rationalist architecture, which will be inaugurated on March 28.

«We have now gone well beyond the deceptive stereotypes that wanted the “eco-sustainable” building to be aesthetically lacking, expensive and with slower construction times», say the two architects who in Italy, among the first, promoted a new approach to the design and construction of buildings pursuing the objective since the early years of activity of «OGB STUDIO», Laura Scrimieri and Riccardo Hopps. Their offices are in Rome and Milan, and they base their consulting philosophy on the themes of environmental sustainability and healthiness of the environments, as well as on standards recognized throughout the world, such as LEED, BREEAM and WELL.

Other significant projects in the capital such as the Corinthia and the Rosewood, both historic buildings that offer unique panoramic views, respectively of the Chamber of Deputies and Via Veneto. These join a series of prestigious restorations, including the Deloitte building and the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti offices. In parallel, innovative projects such as the “Green Island” and the transformation of the former Poligrafico dello Stato highlight a growing commitment to urban sustainability, with particular attention to achieving important environmental certifications such as LEED.

Spazio Domal: the new LEED certified showroom

The Domal exhibition space has obtained LEED Certification

When the priority objective is the sustainability of the places where people live, even a showroom can become green: the new Domal space in Milan has obtained the GOLD level of the LEED v4 ID+C certification. The prestigious goal, specific for interiors and retail spaces, was achieved after a long and delicate work of support and coordination of the entire certification procedure conducted by OGB STUDIO.

In particular, attention was paid to the choice of materials free of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), highly toxic elements for those who live in indoor environments, often present in furnishings and building materials. In the project, in fact, it was preferred to select natural materials and introduce green elements to re-establish direct contact with nature even in closed spaces.

Great attention has also been paid to the aspect of energy efficiency thanks to the activation of an Advanced Commissioning process useful for verifying and testing the functionality of all systems to guarantee maximum energy performance; the installation of high-efficiency ventilation filters and heat recovery will ensure a healthy indoor environment throughout the year.

Webinar, LEED and the EU Taxonomy

The EU taxonomy is concerned with establishing the global reference standards for determining whether an economic activity can be considered environmentally sustainable.

An ambitious attempt that introduces a new approach to “green” assessments focused on economic activities with the aim of encouraging sustainable investments and preventing greenwashing, the so-called façade of environmentalism.

An important path that could really make a difference for many sectors, including the construction sector. To support European policies in this process, as USGBC underlines in the document called Leeds and the EU taxonomy, is the international environmental certification protocol:

LEED is a useful operational tool that already allows for verification of the criteria established by the EU Taxonomy thanks to procedures, applicable calculation methods and comparison between the different metrics.

This was discussed on February 8th during the Webinar conducted by USGBC in which OGB STUDIO participated and which provided interesting technical input on the topic. During the meeting, the LEED V4 and V4.1 BD+C protocols were analyzed, both in the context of the Technical Screening criteria for climate change mitigation and the Do no significant harm criteria (DNSH).

To date, LEED is the most widely used and recognized operating system for performance analysis in green building in the world:

more than 110,000 projects and over 182 countries and territories. “LEED v4, LEED v4.1 and LEED Zero can help meet the established criteria of the European taxonomy and achieve the goals of the #GreenDeal flight to make the whole of Europe a net-zero emission society by 2050,” writes USGBC.

The system with which LEED operates is in fact perfectly aligned with the European objectives. In particular, both (EU and LEED) include objectives of:

  • Reduce climate change
  • Improving individual human health
  • Protect and restore water resources
  • Protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Promote sustainable and regenerated materials
  • Building a Green Economy
  • Improving the quality of life of the community

USGBC LEED in Motion Health Report

LEED Certification: Not only good for the environment, but also for your health.

To underline the data in a particularly complicated moment due to the continuous rambling of the Covid 19 pandemic,  the new LEED in Motion “Health” report conducted by USGBC researchers.

The buildings in which we spend a large part of our lives have a huge impact on the quality of our health and well-being, the study finds.

Decisions about their design, construction and operation have a much greater impact than you might think. Examples include monitoring indoor air quality, acoustics and sound absorption, materials used and the amount of “green” space present.

LEED certification offers easily analyzable standards regarding the greater healthiness of buildings and, moreover, the indexes can be applied to all types of buildings, not only those used for offices, but also for the commercial sector, schools, hospitals and common homes.

To truly understand the scope of a LEED certification, the report highlights how 65% of the prerequisites and credits that are achieved thanks to the certification protect and promote the well-being and health of the users of the analyzed site, 34% can benefit the entire surrounding community and 58% has a health relevance on a global scale (water efficiency, energy dissipated and produced, sustainability).

In the words of the famous African-American writer, James A. Baldwin, “We can't change everything that happens to us, but nothing can be changed unless it is faced.”.

In this sense we now have before us a challenge that must be seized as an opportunity for growth, both for the well-being of an improved version of architecture and for the individual.
